BlizzCon 2019

Looking back at 2019 and comparing it to everything that's been happening now is a whirlwind of emotions. Here recently BlizzCon announced that they will be postponing BlizzCon until 2021 due to the pandemic, which honestly was a smart move on their part. This announcement came at the same time I was putting together this blog so I want to use it as more of a remembrance of the good times and the good times to be had.

This was my second BlizzCon, and honestly was 1000% better than the year prior. First off I got to stay and spend time with Team Hoku throughout the week, and I really freaking missed them. Being from opposite sides of the country sucks sometimes, but when we're back together it's like we pick up from where we left off.  The other thing that made this year's BlizzCon better was the fact that I actually got my badge before the event even started. If you don't know... during 2018 I didn't pick up my badge until the last hour of the entire convention... so I really didn't see the convention at all on the inside.  That completely changed this year, and I'm so glad I was able to actually SEE everything!

PLUS this year Blizzard redeemed themselves with the announcement of the brand new Diablo 4!  That was hands down my favorite thing! I've been a huge fan of Diablo and the lore so I'm just excited to see the new cosplays that are going to be made from it. One Cosplay that I got to shoot was from the lovely Vyndi_ whose Demon Hunter was so beautiful to see in person. Plus editing her set and making this huge composite was a dream. This image is probably one of my favorites from 2019 and that's honestly saying something.

I did a LOT of composites for this year's BlizzCon and I really hope you enjoy the sets!

During BlizzCon 2019 there were a few more security changes that happened, that was extremely annoying. The biggest one being that if you didn't have a media badge you could not bring your DSLR camera past security. Which was moved farther out from the convention center? So I and other cosplay photographers were completely cut off from the convention. Even though we bought badges. However, towards the afternoon we were able to find a little bit of a safe haven under and in one of the hotel's parking structures. Though that was an extreme annoyance for me. I will have to say if it wasn't for that fact I wouldn't have been able to do a mini shoot with the wonderful Matt Mercer.

It was during one of my breaks when I saw Jessica and Matt walking towards me and we chatted for a few. I didn't want to take up a lot of their time since they were on their way to a panel, but I was able to get a few shots of Mercer in his McCree. This was really cool just because the idea of voice actors dressing up as the characters they help bring to life is awesome, and getting to capture that and use my composite skills to further make them into their character brings myself a lot of joy. Plus of course, I'm a huge Critical Role fan so getting to photograph the DM himself was just a cherry on top. I hope I get to create more portraits like this in the future, bring something a little different to the convention scene. Something a little more worthwhile and polished than something fast just to be the first.

It doesn't stop there, because I also FINALLY got to shoot the amazing AltF4 Cosplay and Ashleigh Laura from all the way on the other side of the world, Australia. These guys teamed up for a Blizzard contest whose prize was a trip to BlizzCon 2019, which they won with the Sheild Maiden Brigitte. It took a lot of convincing from myself and friends to finally shoot, and it was so SO worth it! Plus, since I also shot Bald Guy Cosplay's Viking Torbjorn I created a father-daughter team up composite, which is one of my favorites from this weekend.

Have I mentioned how much I really enjoy Diablo, and how freaking BLOWN AWAY I was with the new announcement? With the announcement of Diablo IV Henchman Props and Blizzard teamed up to create this fantastic Lilith cosplay and I'm so happy I was able to get a few shots in. I wasn't able to get a private shoot in, however, when they're were out by the statue I was able to get some surprisingly decent shots. Including enough to do a Frankenstein edit, which you can see the breakdown, down below.

Speaking of Frankenstein, can we just take a moment to gush over how awesome Kurstinaa Kosplay's Zarya looks? You guys wouldn't know it but we shot this set in the basement corner of one of the hotels. This is one of the reasons why I will forever love composite photography and being able to take a not so great situation and still be able to make magic.

BlizzCon over the past two years has skyrocketed to one of the top spots for favorite conventions to go to. The level of cosplay game is top tier and the people surrounding Blizzard have been extremely kind.  I hope to roam the dark market again soon and trade pins and badges again. I will miss Blizzcon, but I know it will return to us all eventually!
